FREDERICK, MD - Frederick City Police Department's interim police chief already has some goals for the next few months.

Mayor Randy McClement appointed Captain Thomas Ledwell as acting chief Monday morning.

"I'm excited," says Ledwell. "I know there are a number of challenges in that position, but I'm up for it, and I've got a good staff of people. We've got a good group of officers at the department."

Ledwell says he wants to continue reducing crime in the city and work closely with the community. He's also interested in data driven policing.

"I think that one of the advantages in filling the spot with Chief Dine departing is that we have strong community support, which makes the job easier," says Ledwell.

Ledwell also says he's considering running for the permanent position. He'll begin his duties when Chief Kim Dine leaves the department Wednesday, December 5th.

"I'm looking forward to it," says Ledwell. "I like the challenges. I like working with the community. I think it's the next step in a career of service to the community, so I'm happy about it."

It should take about four to six months for the mayor to permanently fill the position.
