FREDERICK, MD - Frederick officials broke ground Wednesday at the Jefferson Technology Park, and it's expected to create 7,000 jobs.
"This park was revived by a direct result of this board of county commissioners," says Blaine Young, (R), president of the Frederick County Board of Commissioners. "When we took office, we got to work right away to resolve some legal issues with the owners and developers."
The 173 acre park will include 1.3 million square feet of space for new jobs and more than 800 new homes.
"Frederick County is already on the map, but I think this is going to take it one step further," says Brad Cline, managing member of Jefferson Park. "It'll bring some major companies in here. They've already done a great job in doing that. SCIC is here. We've got MedImmune, and you'll see a lot more of that to come."
A hotel and conference center will also end up at the park. Hyatt has expressed interest in building.
"You'll also see a lot of good restaurants coming here," Cline said. "We've already got two of them coming in and I think you'll see a lot more. Frederick's a great place to live, and I think it'll be a wonderful project."
Developers will shell out about $25 million to update the roads in the area.
"During its building, we'll have over 2,500 construction jobs," Young said.
County commissioners voted four-to-one to approve the park and a 20-year agreement with developers. David Gray (R) was the only commissioner opposed.
