HAGERSTOWN, MD - With Veterans Day landing on a Sunday when all schools are closed, one local college held a Veterans Day event to make sure their student veterans were recognized.
"I'm a Vietnam veteran. When I was first in the military the public didn't accept us like they do now," says Allen Calvert, a student veteran. "The American public now are accepting of veterans and that means a lot to us."
The presentation included an invocation by Pastor John Miller, a local missionary and a performance of Taps given by a Hagerstown Community College student.
Many at HCC shared how proud they are to be part of a college that embraces student veterans.
"When the college administrators heard I was a veteran they asked me to form a club since we didn't have an active veterans club on campus before," says Calvert. "They have been very supportive."
Students at the college say veterans are able to wear two hats at the same time.
"We have a job we do for the military. Sometimes that means putting your civilian job aside. Then picking up our military job," says student veteran Mark Goodnight. "Once you do your military task then you go back to being a civilian and pick up where you left off."
Veterans say one of the main highlights was receiving a flag that has flown over the Nation's Capital, delivered from Senator Barbara Mikulski's office, commemorating the heroes of our nation.
