Sheriff Shirley Re-elected: Jefferson County Reacts

JEFFERSON COUNTY, WV - There's a sense of division among locals in Jefferson County after the re-election of Sheriff Shirley.

WHAG spoke with dozens of voters and found out whether they're close friends with the Sheriff, or supporters of Earl Ballenger, the decision was almost unanimous to not speak on camera.

However, one man did speak up. He's a Jefferson County native and voted for Ballenger, but wishes to remain anonymous.

"If you've got to take someone to trial, don't put them on the ballot to be voted for," says the anonymous Jefferson County voter.

This voter says Shirley lost his support after the 2010 incident, when Shirley and 14 unidentified officers severely beat a Harpers Ferry man after robbing a bank.

"I don't think it's right. I don't think he should be put on the ballot, because you don't go out there, catch people, and beat them up and get by with it. That's wrong," says the anonymous voter.

Shirley is back in office and free on bond until the criminal trial begins this January 22, 2013.

Sheriff Shirley declined to appear on camera and says he has no comment about his re-election to office.
