VIDEO: Shiny Object in Sky Baffles Onlookers, 911 Center

HAGERSTOWN - Several people spotted a shiny object hovering in the sky over Hagerstown Wednesday afternoon.
"It will reflect the sun as it spins, and then it will fade out until it spins the whole way around again," Karen Copenhaver said after spotting it over the west end of Hagerstown.

Ashley Grove took some video of the object from her home on Concord Street in Hagerstown.  She said it seemed like a "twinkling star that got very bright at times."  She shared the video with WHAG.

The Washington County 911 Center received a few calls about it, but operators didn't have any information about what it might be.

The National Weather Service says it launches weather balloons at 8 a.m. from its office near Dulles International Airport, but they say the balloon would not have remained in the sky for very long.

Did you see it?  Do you have a photo or video?  Email us at news@whag.com.

WHAG spoke with a Hagerstown Regional Airport employee working the air traffic control tower.  He says he put on binoculars and saw the flying object, and came to the conclusion that it was just a weather balloon.

Comments

I wouldn't doubt what everyone said they had seen. Over the summer my husband and I almost ran off the road because we saw red lights flashing in the sky forming a line. It was out close to Cearfoss. Very odd! Anyway, just my 2 cents. It also creeps me out because I used to live on Concord St. Not sure what is worse there with aliens or out here in the mountains with coyotes.

Did WHAG really allow her F bomb comment and loop it over again? You can clearly hear it right after she says look how bright it is.

The HGR Airport needs to get new binoculars...no way it was a weather balloon. Witnessed and viewed by 8 power plant employees in Williamsport through binoculars will unconditionally state it was a cylinder shaped object with tab-like attachments rotating slowly. Every half revolution it became extremely bright. Did not change altitude or position for close to an hour. Not sure what it was but it absolutely was not a weather balloon. Ask the three commercial jets that ventured by to take a look.
