Berryville, VA - Fiddlin' and Dave and Morgan is a husband and wife duo that has been playing traditional ballads on the stage together for 21 years.
They were the first act of the night, and knew exactly how to get the party started over at the Watermelon Park Fest.
"A lot of old time Appalachian fiddle stuff, some fiddle tunes from all over the world, Celtic, Eastern European," says Morgan Morrison, the wife of the duo.
Cars piled behind one another, crowds brought lawn chairs, and children danced in circles. Many not knowing the history behind the gathering.
"It is an honor of the history of the park. This Watermelon Park in Berryville back in the 60's and 70's, Bluegrass and country music, some of the greats were here," says David Vandeventer, the husband of the duo.
The three day American roots music festival along the Shenandoah River also included a variety of vendors. Souvenirs, clothes and artwork were also on display and for sale.
"The music's great, it's diverse, the guys that throw it, they like a lot of different types of music and that reflects the type of performers that they get and I love the spot. It's where the Shenandoah River is. It's a beautiful spot," adds Morrison.
There was plenty of food to go around as well, ranging from African cuisine to Mexican and Greek.
So where does the title 'Watermelon Festival' come from? Back in 1939, John Miller purchased the 300 acre field and later decided to grow and sell watermelons.
In 1942, he started what is now called Berryville's Watermelon Festival, an ancient tradition that continues to live on.
