FREDERICK COUNTY, MD- Frederick County school officials may need to hire a real estate agent if commissioners get their way.
"I think it was a horrible idea to build that building in that location for our school system," says Billy Shreve, Frederick County commissioner. "It's a horrible location for a government entity to operate, very expensive and there's just a higher and better use for that property."
County officials say the school board is considering refinancing their central building, in order to cut some costs, but commissioners are hoping they'll consider moving entirely out of downtown.
"That location is right across from the MARC train right across from the bus," says Shreve. "It can be a great location for an office building and or a conference center."
County officials are suggesting to the school board to relocate their offices to land they already own. They say they can construct a building that better fits their needs.
"The expense of running the school system would be less, I mean they're paying $1.1 million a year on their lease in addition to that they're paying $250,000 just for parking," says Shreve.
The president of the Frederick County Board of Education, Angie Fish, says "We've just heard of the idea and none of the board members have contacted me interested in pursuing it. I don't see the feasibility of the idea. "
"They don't need all that space, it's not occupied and the plan was for central offices to get smaller not bigger," says Shreve.
The building opened up two years ago...And county officials say school offices have been there two years too long.
