Crews Clean Up Damage After Smithsburg Storm

SMITHSBURG, MD - With much of the area under a severe thunderstorm warning for winds in excess of 60 miles per hour on Tuesday, most neighborhoods made it through without damage.
But crews in Smithsburg saw just what strong winds can do.

"We just had to reattach our line to the pole and add a couple spans of cable that was broken up," says wire technician Robert Stagg.

The concentrated damage could be evidence of straight-line winds, or a microburst, coming through; winds powerful enough to take down trees and telephone poles.

The damage shut down West Water Road, and more damage could be seen around Smithsburg cemetery and throughout town.

"That area on that end of town actually took the brunt of the wind," says police chief George Knight Jr. "I was actually sitting at Veterans Park when it came through and it seemed to be small in nature width-wise but pretty powerful."

But crews worked to restore the lines as fast as possible.

"The crew that actually arrived here, they worked really hard up until they restored power," says Knight. "So I'd like to send out a thanks to them for doing that."
