WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - It was a step back into time this weekend for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. For George Wunderlich its more than just an historical era, it's a time period that hits close to home.

"For me not only to see this," says Wunderlich. "It never ceases to amaze me, and I've done this since I was 11 years old."

Wunderlich's great great grandfather fought on South Mountain 150 years ago. His passion has been history and finding links to his family's past. It's a story that many others share.

"Many of the people here had relatives who fought in battles and fought in both sides," says Wunderlich.

It's why dozens are here to learn and experience what their ancestors went through for the 150th anniversary weekend of the Battle of Antietam. There was a soldiers fair to show visitors what home life was like and demonstrations on quilt making.

Not only was there living history but also comparisons with the past and present.

"You go back in the Civil War, if some body had a broken leg or arm injury they would just amputate it," says Specialist Daniel Vida, U.S. Army. "In modern medicine they ask us to put a tourniquet on and then there are modern surgeries to save that limb."
