CUMBERLAND, MD - Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., is apologizing after referring to the Holocaust during an appearance in Cumberland.

The congressman answered a question about how he feels about the government issuing student loans. He went on to say it's a good idea, but it isn't required, according to the Constitution.

"Not that it's not a good idea to give students loans. It certainly is a good idea to give them loans.  But if you can ignore the Constitution to do something good today, tomorrow you will be ignoring the Constitution to do something bad. There are more people in America today of German ancestry than any other... The Holocaust that occurred in Germany - how in the heck could that happen? And when you start down the wrong road, it can be a very slippery slope," Rep. Bartlett said.

Bartlett issued an apology Friday, saying he "used an extreme example" that was "ill-advised and inappropriate."

Rep. Bartlett will be facing off against John Delaney for his current seat in Maryland's 6th Congressional District.
