The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says Correctional Officer Robert Goss was supervising a road crew near exit 19 off of Interstate 68 east Tuesday morning when an inmate escaped.
Officials say Larry Johnson also stabbed 22-year-old Alan Gnegy in the head while trying to steal his car. Johnson then led police on a 12-mile chase, which ended after he lost control and hit a tree.
Officials say Gnegy is in stable condition at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Police say Johnson is a minimum security inmate who was nearing the end of a 20 year sentence. He's been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
