"He was going at a high rate of speed westbound. Apparently he went into a curve, ran off the road and hit a tree. This caused both people in the vehicle to die on impact," says Lt. Tom Newton of Washington County Sheriff's office.
The accident happened on Rench Road just south of Downsville Pike Saturday. Police say it's a sharp curve after a straight-away that people are unaware of; they say the tree has been hit before.
Family friends say they found out within hours of the crash because Samantha had not responded to over twenty text messages.
"The whole front of the vehicle was totally destroyed because of the impact. It appears the engine came back into the driver's portion of the vehicle. It was very severe," says Lt. Newton.
Both were honor roll students and accomplished athletes at Williamsport High School. Samantha was All-State volleyball and played tennis for the Wildcats. She had plans to attend Frostburg State this fall. Her teammates have taken down the net on the court she played on.
Brendon was All-County baseball, named pitcher of the year his Junior year and hoped to walk onto Salisbury's baseball team.
Loved ones found remains of the sports car at the scene Sunday, trying to piece together what happened to a pair of very special and unforgettable teens. Friends say Brendon and Samantha were "A" students and some of the kindest, inclusive people.
On Monday, WHAG spoke with a man whose son was very close with Brendon. They were going to be college roommates in the fall. He was one of the first at the scene after the accident and says walking from his car to the crash site was the most horrifying 500 yards of his life.
"We should be remembering the after parties that everyone was at and the prom pictures, but instead we're mourning over the two deaths that were, it's just terrible," says Heather Price, a friend.
A baseball from Brendon's father lies in the center of the flowers, including hand-written notes from friends, but one of the most telling items is a box of Kleenex.
The two families made funeral arrangements Monday at Osborne Funeral Home.
