Suspect in Custody for Fire at Historic Tenant Home in Williamsport

By: Import User
Updated: February 6, 2007
Investigators said 18-year-old Lauren France of Clear Spring has been arrested in connection with last weeks fire. The mayor of Williamsport said she was the daughter of the curator and once lived in the home before she was evicted. Investigators said the fire was started by flammable liquid. It took 50 firefighters about an hour to control this one-alarm blaze. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. The estimated cost of the damage was well over $100,000. The building is the former home of the founder of Williamsport. The towns mayor said even though this was devastating for the community, hes looking at the brighter side. "Its brought renewed spirit and more awareness to the property. If theres anything good to come out of it at all, were going to take a step forward after this and were going to get something done. We have citizens already wanting to volunteer something for the Tenant House. So I think thats wonderful to make something good out of a bad situation," said Williamsport Mayor James McCleaf. Lauren France was released on an $80,000 bond earlier this week. She faces second degree arson charges. The deputy state fire marshal said it was the use of canines and information from witnesses that lead to her arrest.
