Framing a House

Skinnier walls may mean more room for you, but they're also going to cost you more money. Lets show you a few reasons why you want to go with a 2x6 exterior wall.

Most builders frame their new homes with 2x4 exterior walls. But there are three good reasons why bigger is better when it comes to the exterior walls of your new house. Exterior walls framed with 2x6 studs will ensure that your home is stronger, more energy efficient, and much quieter!

When it comes to strength, a 2x6 exterior wall will stand up better in the face of tornado- and hurricane-force winds. A 2x6 exterior wall actually has 60% more material mass than a 2x4 exterior wall. More mass translates to more strength.

With a 2x4 exterior wall, you are limited to R13 insulation. A 2x6 wall gives you the option of filling the thicker wall cavity with R19 insulation. While R19 insulation will cost a little more money up front (approximately $1,000 more for a 2,000 square-foot home), you will quickly recoup this initial investment with the money you save on monthly utility bills. Best of all, you will continue to save money every month you live in the home.

Finally, a home with thicker, more heavily insulated walls will provide a quieter retreat for you and your family!
