Updated: February 6, 2007
The first happened just after one a.m. Tuesday at Giovannis Pizza on Eagle School Road. Officers said the suspect got away with a cash register and a small amount of cash. Video surveillance cameras captured a slender white man. Around 2:25 a.m., police said a cash register was stolen from the Old Berkeley Pub on Winchester Avenue. The suspect entered through a broken window. A little less than an hour later, officers responded to an intrusion alarm on Queen Street at Exotic Customs. Police said a window was opened but it does not appear anything was taken. Finally around one p.m., officers responded to Zepplins on Williamsport Pike. They said someone forced entry in the early morning hours and took money from the businesses machines. Contact Martinsburg city police if you have any information. Reported by Melanie Woodrow mwoodrow@nbc25.com" Retailers Expect Sales to More than Double during Tax-Free Days,1156287044,1156287044,NBC25 NEWS- For the next five days Maryland shoppers wont have to worry about taxes.,"The state of Maryland isnt waiting for Santa Claus for this holiday - five days of tax-free shopping. Local retailers are expecting sales to more than double. "Even though its really a small amount that theyre saving, a lot of people are going to be here. A lot of people make it an event. Weve heard a lot of people talking about saving up and not spending now and waiting until this holiday begins," said Andrew Wetzel, Manager of Pacific Sunwear. "Its going to be busy, but its always nice being busy. I think Im looking forward to it," said Braughan Morrison, from the management team at Hot Topic. Most clothing and shoes costing less than $100 are tax-free but for accessories like handbags or neckties, youll pay the normal five-percent extra. Maryland is offering the sales tax holiday to try to keep back-to-school shopping dollars in-state, while helping merchants stay competitive with neighboring states. For local retailers, it couldnt have come at a better time. "Some sales have been down. So, tax free hopefully will pump those back up and get more people coming in," said Morrison.
