Police said during the day, Hagerstown City Park serves as a peaceful place, but at night when the lights go down, the park becomes not only dark, but dangerous.
Travis Harvey and Brandon Harris of Hagerstown allegedly attacked them out of nowhere.
"They were older men in their 50s or 60s and they were approached by two younger men," said Sgt. Paul Kifer of the Hagerstown Police.
Officers said the two suspects broke off a pole to beat the men.
"When they came into the pavilion, they attacked them, striking them in the head with the two metal poles as they slept," said Kifer.
Officers say the senseless act didnt stop here. They went on to rob the men of the little money they had. "Theres no way these gentlemen could defend themselves sleeping; its unfortunate," said
The park closes at 10 p.m., and its against park policies to stay on the property after hours, let alone, sleep there.
"Not to say the victim deserved it, but its not well lit at night; its a place you shouldnt be," said Kifer.
Reach Caregivers are hoping more of Hagerstowns homeless will consider turning to them rather than the streets.
"Reach Center helps with housing and mental health services, anything they need we try to help with," said Jill Parker of the Reach Caregivers.
They have helped people like Stacie Cortez, who was homeless for almost two years before coming to the center.
"I am shocked that it happened. Ive been hearing lately homeless people being mugged and raped," said Stacie Cortez, who has been homeless for almost two years.
It was a crime committed in the dead of night that investigators are hoping to shed some light on.
Investigators spoke with one of the suspects. They said something terrible had happened to him in the same park, and he apparently felt he had to retaliate and take his anger out on someone else.
