Football Player's Death Still a Mystery

By: Import User
Updated: February 6, 2007
There are still no answers as to why the 17-year-old died that day. For the players and coaches at Shippensburg University this week has been a tough one, dealing with the loss of offensive lineman Vincent Bernardo. Friday is the first time that coach Rocky Reese spoke to the press about his players death. "It was cool as I recall, Ive heard everything from 77 degrees to 82 degrees, but it was not the blistering heat that weve had recently. The practice is planned so the big guys will do the exercise first in the coolest part of the day, so the offensive linemen, which Vince was, were the first guys up in the test," said Reese. "He was on the field when the trainers first got to him and he made the comment to them why is this happening to me? I am in the best shape of my life," said Reese. "We had no idea till later on in the drill, much later, towards the end of the drill when the associate athletic director came out and told me that he had passed," said Reese. "To have it happen right there on the field where you are, or in the training room where you actually go, it really hits home a little harder," said Reese. "We thought he was going to be a real good player, but he was also a real good kid, he was one of those kids you recruit. When you walk out of the recruiting meeting with them, you like the kid, you liked him," said Reese. "They said the night before when they were watching TV he was stretching, laying on the floor stretching and telling the guys he was excited to do the test because he was going to pass it; cause he was in the best shape he had ever been in his life, and that he had passed the test himself, he ran it himself. I think we have what appeared to be a very healthy young man who for some reason has left us," said Reese. A memorial service is planned for Bernardo this Sunday at his former high school. Coach Reese will be taking any player who wants to attend.
