Theyre being asked to get rid of weapons and other contrabands found in the prison. This comes after three inmates stabbed an officer to death last month. Officer Joe Charette from the Maryland Correction Institute is refusing to go. Joe Charette was in the honor guard for David McGuinns funeral on Thursday. He said he will not go to help clear the prison in Jessup. Charette believes there just arent enough officers to go around. "In my opinion we are all short staffed as it is, taking more officers out to go to another institution, does put us at some risk," said Corrections Officer Joseph Charette at MCI. NBC25s Gretchen Gailey asked if it puts the community at risk as well. "We are still able to do the job, its just a matter of not having to do as many programs, if there are less programs for us to do, than thats more time we can spend towards security," said Charette. "Do you go into work, during the day and ever worry, feel like you dont have what you need to do the job?" asked Gailey. "A lot of times yes, yes, its a job that nobody else wants to do and sometimes when you look around there is nobody around to help you out if its necessary," said Charette. The Department of Corrections said they have no idea when pulling officers down to Jessup will end.
