Town Left Without Mayor and Council Woman

By: Import User
Updated: February 6, 2007
According to city employees who spent the week wondering if theyd get paid, it was a bad week for the mayor to resign. The acting mayor addressed all his employees at City Hall, let them know he signed every pay check, and reassured everyone that while it is a one man show, the show will go on. When Marques Rice ran for City Council, he was the youngest in the state of West Virginia. He is now a veteran of sorts. "Ive been here 8 years. I like to have my hand in everything anyway, so to me Im just trying to let it go like every day business," said Marques Rice, acting Mayor. Far from every day business, leadership in Keyser took a turn this week after a 12 year veteran of the council stepped down. "She turned in her letter of resignation, and then the mayor stood up and said Sally, I believe Ill join you," said Rice. The citys administrator Roger Newlin and Rice are now handling the entire towns business. "According to the Secretary of State and Attorney General of West Virginia, at this time I am considered the city government," said Rice. Rices new role has him taking on more hats than one man could wear in a week. "Right now, Im filling in, doing the mayors job, water commissioners job, sewer commissioners job, street commissioners job, finance commissioners job, police commissioners job and fire commissioners job," said Rice. If youre counting, thats seven jobs, and then you add in his "9 to 5," said Rice. "I work full time at new page. I also own a lawn care landscape business, and Im a member of the Keyser Volunteer Fire Department and Keyser EMS," said Rice. Rice said he will continue to be involved with his other volunteer jobs, paid jobs, and newest job. "When I decided that I wanted to do this, I decided to go at it full-hearted to make this city a better place. Ive decided Im gonna live here, raise my family here, and die so Im going to do what I can to make it a prosperous place," said Rice.
