According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education schools and playgrounds are becoming safer. This is the second year in a row that has shown a decrease in fights, thefts, bullying and bringing weapons to school.
Officials said that the decrease in violence can be attributed to the heightened efforts to focus on schools and their communities.
Tuscarora School District is just one of the many districts that saw a drop in violence. Their superintendent said that it all comes from a policy of zero tolerance.
"I think it is accurate. I think its great news obviously and I think its attributable to a couple of factors. In general my sense is that schools and communities have really become much more aware of school safety since Columbine and some of the other tragedies that have occurred in schools," said Dr. Thomas Stapleford, Superintendent for Tuscarora School District.
