Shane Sellers Volkswagen Gulf starts up like most cars, but theres one big difference, its grease-powered.
"It still smells like a restaurant on wheels," said Seller, an art professor at Frederick Community College.
Sellers bought the conversion kit two years ago, a second fuel tank for vegetable oil sits in the spare-tire well, and an extra filter under the hood pre-heats the oil.
"With the push of a button, Ill be running on vegetable oil," said Sellers.
It saves him about a $100 each month at the gas pump.
"It was just-wow-what an interesting idea; the concept of it being more environmental, the concept of it being renewable, and also having a certain amount of independence," said Sellers.
Sellers conversion kit cost about $900, and with the help of a few friends, it took about two days to install. When he asked local restaurants for their used grease, it took some convincing.
"Theres always the apprehension of what are you doing with this oil and why are you asking and then after you explain to them, and depending on the intrigue of the people involved in the restaurant, many times theyre excited about it," said Sellers.
About once a month, Sellers loads up with 30 gallons of used cooking oil from restaurants.
"I think now its so much in the national consciousness to have some sort of awareness of fuel and fuel consumption that most people are intrigued and excited to know youre doing something to make a difference," said Sellers.
