On Friday, the town received the final bit of funding necessary to extend a popular local trail in Chambersburg. Dorothy Dewalt enjoys walking through Chambersburg on the trail. She said it helps her a great deal. "Its easier than climbing up the steps and them big hills. Its a blessing," said Dewalt, a trail walker. The city of Chambersburg received a check for $330,000 to complete the $1 million Rail to Trail. "Its a great asset, that we have now, rather than a train going through Chambersburg or a blight area through Chambersburg. If you havent gone down its a nice recreational area," said former mayor, Tom Newcomer. Newcomer started the project in the mid-90s and is thrilled to see his baby grow up. "This is a dream we started 10 years ago and we really put it together," said Newcomer. The project would not have been made possible if it werent for the federal funding brought home to the 9th district by Congressman Bill Shuster. "People come to walk the trails then they wonder off into the streets and maybe buy something from a local business, or have lunch or dinner or something like that. These things are very positive for the community," said Congressman Bill Shuster, (R) 9th District. With the new funding, the trail will be extended about another half mile to Main Street. Just last year the first portion of the trail was completed and gave residents one point one miles of undisturbed trail to enjoy a variety of recreational activities. The new extension will lengthen the trail to one point seven miles. Borough planners hope to have the rest of the trail completed in two to three years.
