It happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday night in Smithsburg, near the intersection of Route-66 and Pondsville Road.
Maryland state police said 25-year-old Katherine Adams lost control of her Dodge Intrepid. The car veered off the roadway, then struck a guardrail and another car.
Her daughter was taken to Washington County Hospital with serious injuries.
Adams and the other driver were not injured. The four-year-old was restrained in a child-safety seat.

North branch is the largest and most technologically-advanced prison under construction in the country today. When the prison is completed, north branch and the adjacent western correctional institution will combine to form one of the largest employers in the region.
