WASHINGTON COUNTY

Updated: February 6, 2007
Law Enforcement Officers from Maryland State Police, Washington County Sheriffs Department, and Hagerstown City Police pounded the pavement to raise money for the Special Olympics. Its an effort that touches the hearts of many families. "Its just great to see their support for our kids," said Diane Artz, whose son carried the torch. Participants started the annual Maryland Law Enforcement Torch Run in Hancock. Later in the day, they trekked through downtown Hagerstown as supporters cheered from the sidelines. Special Olympian Alan Artz of Williamsport ran a mile with the flame of hope, although he wont be participating in this years summer games. "Alan was a diabetic and received a pancreas transplant the day before thanksgiving. Hes had a few bumps in the road this spring, so he wasnt able to train and really wont be able to participate this year, but hopes to continue next year," said Artz. The week-long relay raises money to pay for various costs associated with holding the Maryland Summer Games. "They enjoy doing it for those kids. Weve been doing it for a long time here in Hagerstown," said John Ryder, Regional Director, Maryland Special Olympics. This is the 20th year for the Torch Run. It benefits a program near and dear to Margie French and her son, Joseph Clay, who both compete in the Olympics. "Washington County is special to me. Actually, Washington County touches my heart a lot. Special Olympics touches my heart a lot," said Margie French, Special Olympian. The torch run will continue into Frederick on Thursday. Runners will end up at Towson University on Saturday. Saturday is when the flames from all four portions of the run will be brought together to officially start the summer Special Olympics in Maryland.
