A Waynesboro man was killed in a high speed accident on Route 64 near the Pennsylvania line. Michael Neibert, 19, was killed when he slammed his car into a tree. State police said he was drag racing on the wrong side of the road. Police said they have no idea how fast Michael Neibert was going but he was killed on impact. His passenger, 17-year-old Gary Bird Jr. ended up in Washington County Hospital. "I cant say nothing bad about him, he was a very good boy," said Daniel Shearer, a family friend. Police are now releasing the name of the second driver involved in the accident. They said 29-year-old Eugene Smetzer of Waynesboro was racing 19-year-old Michael Neibert. Smetzer is charged with reckless driving, speeding and other payable traffic violations. Friends of Neiberts family said this was just something they didnt expect from him. "You never expect something like this. No one does. Why would he even be out doing that there when he should be home?" said Shearer. Around 10 p.m. Neibert and Bird were racing down the westbound lane going the wrong direction when an oncoming car approached them and forced them off the road. They ended up at an embankment where they slammed into a tree. Neibert and Bird both graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School last year and were considered good friends. "He was a good kid," said Melissa Kennedy, a longtime family babysitter. Family and friends remember Neibert as a boy who was up for anything. "We went down to the beach each year growing up. "What was that like?" asked NBC25 reporter Gretchen Gailey. "Spontaneous. You never knew what we were going to get into next," said Dwight Kennedy, a longtime friend. In his high school yearbook, Neibert wrote that hell miss "riding the tech bus and food fights in the cafeteria." The most ironic passage was when he said hell "remember off-roading with Bird and wrecking the Chevy."
