Special Olympics Gives Special Donation to the Wroten Family

By: Import User
Updated: January 22, 2008
"I think Jeff would be proud," said Warden Rod Sowers from Roxbury Prison. Friends of slain Correctional Officer Jeffery Wroten said he would have been moved to see the outpouring of support from a group of special athletes usually on the receiving end. A portion of proceeds from the annual Division of Correction Torch Run, Walk and Tug of War are being donated to the Wroten family. "Im very happy about that especially for his children sitting behind them at the funeral you just couldnt help but have an overwhelming sense because I have children myself and what if I wasnt there to be with them," said Captain Rick Miller, from Roxbury Prison. Since 1993, the Maryland Division of Correction has raised more than $200,000 for Special Olympics. Now its the athletes turn to give a $1,000 check to the Wroten Family Scholarship Fund. "Its always a special way to honor somebody who recently had their livelihood taken away," said Nicholas Stewart, an Olympian. The athletes were made honorary correctional officers "Its all about giving. Its about a special group of people today. It really combines the best of my world" said Gov. Bob Ehrlich, (R) Maryland. The days events led up to one grand finale, the tug-of-war. "Were one of the lighter teams so were trying to build up, can you get us some more burgers?" said a participant. On the left were lightweights; Jeffs friends from Roxbury. On the right was three-time champions, The House of Corrections, or as they call it the Castle on the Hill. The House may have won but Roxbury didnt lose. "Its a great day, get to raise money for Special Olympics so it was a good thing," said a Roxbury team member. "Were gonna come back heavier. Eat more chips," said another Roxbury team player. They also hope to raise more bucks. Reported by Melanie Woodrow" Unexpected Loss for Sen.
