Fridays ceremony was not only to honor firefighters and officers killed in the line of duty but to pay tribute to their families.
Without their support, the men remembered could not have put their lives on the line every day.
Correctional Officer Jeffery Wrotens former wife Tracy was at the ceremony. Tracy accepted a replica of the Fallen Heroes Memorial in honor of her husband.
Correctional Officer Wroten was killed in January while guarding an inmate at Washington County Hospital.
The ceremony began with a procession of more than 25 police and fire department honor guard units from across Maryland as well as motorcycles and bagpipers.
The theme of the day was clear, most of us will not be called upon to risk our lives to save others but each of us is called upon to honor our fallen heroes.
Local correctional officer Mark Martin escorted Tracy and her family to todays ceremony.
"We drove down together. The ride down was very lighthearted. The family was laughing, some of the kids hadnt been to Baltimore and enjoyed seeing the sights around the beltway. It got a little more somber as we came down into the crowd," said Martin.
It was a difficult ceremony for Tracy and her daughters who were visibly upset.
There is a fundraising dinner and auction Monday night with benefits going to Correctional Officer Wrotens children.
It will be at 6 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton in Hagerstown. Tickets are $30.
