College Students Job Hunt at Local College Career Fair

FREDERICK COUNTY, MD - Mount St. Mary's University held their annual Spring Internship and Job Fair Wednesday. A total of 33 employers were there to scout up and coming students to fill open positions.

Katarina Harvey is a senior biology major at the university, and hopes to land a job by graduation in May.

"It makes me nervous a little bit but I'm very positive," says Harvey, "I feel like something is going to work out either way."

Harvey says she asked employers questions about entry-level openings and the type of candidates they're seeking. 

"They get to interact with employers in a professional manner for real jobs and internships," says Clare Tauriello, Director of the CareerCenter.

"If you're applying for a job online you might not get the information that you want," says Harvey. "You could just ask somebody like at a Career Fair exactly the questions that you want to ask."

Numbers show that Mount Saint Mary's students fare well in the job hunt after graduation.

"One year out of Mount St. Mary's is a 94% graduation rate," says Tauriello. "That's including both full and part-time positions."

That means most students have a full or part-time job within a year after graduating.

"I actually think there's more jobs available for my graduating class than the previous class I guess because the economy got better," says Felicia Aroyewun, a senior studying psychology and criminal justice.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports a 1.8 percent increase in employment last year.
