Housing Market Looking Brighter for Sellers

HAGERSTOWN, MD- Realtors have found themselves busier than the norm for this time of year. They say it's all thanks to the fastest home sales they've seen in six years.

"The past month we haven't been able to keep inventory on the market," says Steve Powell, co-owner and realtor at Remax Achievers. "Current listings we're having are going into contract within weeks."

According to industry experts competitive pricing, fewer listings and improvements in unemployment are helping the housing market look brighter.

"People have been on the sidelines too long and buyers are coming back out now," says Powell.

Anne Huffer and her husband decided to sell their six-bedroom home a couple of years ago, but didn't get the outcome they were hoping for.

"It sat and sat and sat," says Huffer. "A few people looked but I think it was mostly curiosity."

So they took it off the market, but they recently decided to put it up for sale again. This time around, they say, they've gotten a much better result.

"We put it back on the market this past fall and we have now sold it, or at least it's under contract," says Huffer.

"I'm seeing some of the more expensive homes go under contract now," says Powell.

Local realtors say the market is pretty even between buyers and sellers right now, but they can see that changing in the near future.

'If you need to sell your home because of relocation, job loss or just want to down size, now you have the best opportunity to be able to sell your house at a fair price because of market value," says Powell.

Local realtors say there are about 900 homes for sale in WashingtonCounty, approximately 300 are currently under contract.
