Locals Thrilled About Getting First Latin Pope

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD- Since Pope Francis was selected by the conclave of cardinals many local Catholics say they're still overwhelmed by this historic event.

"Even now I'm going to cry. It was wonderful they couldn't have chosen anyone better. When you look up the name Francis and you look at two saints and the combination of both those saints, it's nothing but being humble," says Joan Hawvaker, of Saint Joseph Catholic Church.

For some, the results of the newly elected Pope came sooner than expected.

Local priests say the cardinals making a decision in less than two days doesn't indicate any rush to select a new Pope.

"I think they took time, they prayed, got to know each other and selected among themselves the best candidate they could find for themselves," says Father Chris Moore of Saint Joseph Catholic Church.

Pope Francis is the first Pope from South America. The Latin community shared their excitement about having a Latin Pope as leader of the Catholic church.
