WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - A former Halfway fire chief is facing criminal charges for stealing thousands of dollars from the fire company.

Maryland State Police say the former chief and current administrator, Jeffrey Ringer, misused more than $10,000 worth of funds.

The investigation started in 2010 when police received anonymous letters that said Ringer was misusing the fire company's money.

"So it was out of their general fund that he had access, being the chief and the administrative officer. He wrote checks and used the fire department credit card in order to pay for some of his personal expenses," says Lt. Tom Woodward, Maryland State Police.

They believe this went on for a period of three to three-and-a-half years.

Ringer has been a member at Halfway for over three decades, and was the fire chief for more than 20 of those years.

A trial date has been set for May 2nd.
