HAGERSTOWN, MD- Some of the food at Meritus Medical Center is about to change.
"We are excited about a new initiative here at Meritus Health," says Laurie Harrison of the Meritus Healthcare Foundation. "It has everything to do with population health improvement. We are changing the way we are caring for our patients, employees, and our community."
Harrison says they are doing this by changing what they're serving in their dining services.
"Twenty percent of meals will be green food, low in sodium, low in calories and very tasty I must say," says John Barr, Washington County Commissioner.
Barr is one of many in the community who got a bite of some of Chef Joe Fleischman's new recipes.
Starting in March the hospital will no longer be serving fried foods as part of their community health program. So while the fryers are in the dining center now, you won't be seeing them much longer.
"We all know fried food is not good for you. So we've made equipment replacements and some recipes that will make our food like friend foods," says Harrison.
The new health initiative at Meritus Medical Center begins March 1st.
