Free Training Helps With Healthcare Needs

MARTINSBURG, WV- In some regions, health advice is expensive and hard to come by. That's why some new health advisers, who don't cost a cent, are being trained at City Hospital.

"There are people in my church that I'm really concerned about their health," says Pastor Bill Palmer. "And like many, we have family members, that have real concerns on our heart about their health."

While the groups may sound like nutritionists counseling patients, they're actually all practicing to head out into their communities and give health advice for free.

The classes are available thanks to a grant by the CDC, to the program "Change the Future West Virginia."

They teach ways of communicating with friends and neighbors who need help, whether it's going through medical paperwork or developing a healthier lifestyle.

The Center for Community and Rural Health at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg is hoping the training will ultimately help fight obesity, and spread more health information.

If you want to receive health training, you can call Joyce Martin at (304) 793-6571 or email jmartin@osteo.wvsom.edu.
