CHARLES TOWN, WV - The newly built highway is designed to benefit a fast growing community. The new Route 9 has been open in Jefferson County since November.

But county officials have several safety concerns about certain sections of the road.

"Intersecting it are small rural roads. My concern is that people on the rural roads need to safely be able to turn right on this high speed highway," says West Virginia County Commissioner Lyn Widmyer.

A few miles up Blue Ridge Mountain commissioners say another intersection at Chestnut Hill Road poses even greater safety concerns.

"One of them is lighting at night. You can't tell where these roads are. And it's very difficult to negotiate. And to not be run over by someone else who thinks he or she has the right of way," says West Virginia County Commissioner President Dale Manuel.

The commissioners say one of the many concerns is the need for signage at the intersection, especially for those unfamiliar with the area.

"There are problems with the upgrade. It needs to be brought down to the sight distance for Chestnut Hill and 115," says Manuel.

According to to Commissioner Dale Manual, the West Virginia Division of Highways confirmed it is looking at lighting and signage changes.
