Cold Weather Shelters Reach Full Capacity As Temperatures Drop

CHAMBERSBURG, PA- As temperatures continue to drop, the capacity at Chambersburg Cold Weahter Drop-In Shelter has started to rise. Officials who volunteer at the shelter say they're prepping for even colder temperatures.
"We have some roll out cots and we have some extra chairs, lounge chairs, that turn into beds," says Craig Newcomer, the director of the Chambersburg Cold Weather Drop-In Shelter.
The center opens its doors at 7pm and close them at 7am, but officials say they'll extend the hours if needed.
"If there is no where they can go the next day then we extend the hours during the day," says Newcomer. "I'll just stay here a little longer during the day or until they can get somewhere."
Officials at the cold weather shelter say they accept everyone, but they have to earn their sport of they'd like to stay another night.
"We have community services that they do throughout the day," says Newcomer. "For every three hours of community service, they get an extra night stay."
Officials say they cold weather shelter is not government funded and everyone who works there is a volunteer and they're always accepting donations.
"We get a lot of donations, like a lot of blankets and stiff you can see some of the quilts that we have, have been made," says Newcomer.
The Shelter is temporarily opened from December until April.
