HAGERSTOWN, MD - "Because of Martin Luther King, this dream is possible," says Karen Cook, executive director of the Memorial Recreation Center in Hagerstown.
Washington County is bustling with good deeds making this MLK Day a slam dunk.
"Volunteer Washington County likes to say that we don't need a few people to do a lot, we need everybody to do just a little," says Bernadette Wagner, founding director of Volunteer Washington County.
A basketball tournament will fund future volunteering throughout the County, and a much-requested outdoor sports court for Hagerstown's Memorial Recreation Center.
"To me it's exciting that (the kids) are empowered to make their dreams come true," says Wagner.
"It's just all come together wonderfully: The kids are excited, we're excited, and we're definitely looking to doing it again next year," says Cook.
At the Potomac Center, girls are steaming and scraping off old wallpaper to give the bathrooms a face-lift.
"What the girls love to do is give back to the community, and Martin Luther King's dream was for us to give back to the community. So the girls have come here and they're working very, very hard," says Candace Byrd, a local residential counselor.
While the Community Action Council is fixing up a local home, getting it in ship-shape for a new family to rent.
"It's exciting, it's my first time painting a house. It's just cool to do something for someone else," says Shakira Doleman, a volunteer with the Community Action Council and AmeriCorps.
Whether it be through donations or sweat equity, the people of Washington County made huge strides to keep Dr. King's dream alive.
