KEARNEYSVILLE, WV - A Kearneysville man was at work when he received word of a fire at his home.

Sterling McDowell's trailer was swept up in flames by the time crews arrived on the scene, according to Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

"When they first arrived they said it was fully engulfed going out the windows," says Nick Agnew, Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

A woman was also reportedly inside the home at the time of the fire. Fire officials say she was taken to WVU-East Hospital with severe injuries.

Officials say it was difficult getting to the fire due to the heavy debris and unstable ground inside the home.

Firefighters were unable to enter the trailer and had to fight the fire from outside.

"You can see we had some hording type of situation, which hindered the fire department operations. The structure wasn't stable enough to enter so we had to put the fire out from the exterior," says Zac Morgan, Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

Morgan says it's not clear whether there was a smoke detector that could have given an early warning.
