MERCERSBURG, PA - More than 20 international students are studying abroad at Whitetail Resort for their summer vacation from December through March.
One college student Nicolas Cuadra is from Chile. He says, "It's to meet new people and know how Americans live here, getting through their lives, meeting new friends, ski for free that's awesome."
His girlfriend, Delfina Molter from Argentina, is also working at the resort this season. They met in America two years ago when they first worked abroad.
Molter says, "South America is really different. Like the food, meeting the other person, talking with them, the language."
Whitetail says the economy was booming eight years ago and the resort needed the extra help.
Tammy Jones, Whitetail Resort International Coordinator, says, "One of our sister resorts at the time was doing the international program with their students. They had about 50 students at their resort and we thought hey what the heck we'll give it a try."
Ever since, students from South America continue to take advantage of their summer vacation to get paid while experiencing life abroad.
"I like to stay there, not to go two days and see like a few things and go away," says Molter. "I like to know how is it so for me the cultural part is really interesting."
"I saw for the first time a snowflake and I almost cried it was amazing," says Luciana Manning.
The students look upto Manning who was once an international student herself. She's originally from Brazil and now a full-time Whitetail employee.
Similar to Cuadra and Molter, she made the move for love.
"We used to work together," says Manning. "He was one of my favorite American guys because he brought me hot chocolate and candies."
The international students typically don't know one another, but they share the same passion for the slopes.
