Cumberland Man Taken to Hospital After Attempted Arson

CUMBERLAND, MD - The Cumberland Police Department says they transported a man to the hospital early Wednesday morning after he attempted to set fire to his apartment.

Police say they were called to a Virginia Avenue apartment around 12:14 a.m. after family members called reporting a 24-year-old man was distraught and wouldn't open his door.

Police say they talked to the man through his door, however he refused to exit his residence. Police say they soon saw flames coming from inside the apartment.

Officers forced entry and found several small fires in an obvious attempt to burn the structure.

The man was taken into custody and the Cumberland Fire Department extinguished the fire.

Police say the man was taken to the hospital, and they are currently still investigating this incident.
