WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD- What may have been effective years ago is getting in the way today. Hollyhock Road is 850 feet of pavement that may hurt business down the road.
"Hollyhock Road has no long-term purpose," says Robin Ferre, president of Bowman Development Corporation.
This road currently belongs to Washington County, but two developers have asked the county to pass the ownership to them.
"The county doesn't have a use for it and shouldn't spend money to continue to maintain it," says Sarah Lankford-Sprecher, spokesperson for Washington County. "We're going to try to get it to the developers to pursue their plans."
"I just want to take advantage of that location and help promote future retail development on our parcel of land," says Ferree.
If commissioners decide to give up ownership of Hollyhock Road, developers say they plan to build, yet another road, that would allow easier access for people to shop from one area to the next retail area
"By allowing the developer to interconnect the road it'll be easier for county residents and those coming to and out of town to access our retail area," says Lankford-Sprecher.
"So you don't have to go back out to the main highway to go from one retail development to the next retail development," says Ferree.
County officials say the developer of this land hopes to attract restaurants, banks and other retailers.
"It's just one of the steps we need to take to get a nine acre parcel development ready for future retail," says Ferree.
There's still no timeline on when the land would be developed.
Washington County officials will hold a public meeting in the the next few weeks regarding Hollyhock Road.

so therefore the county is going to let the four homeowners that live on that piece of road take care of maintaining it themselves i mean since they already pay property taxes to the county
