The Weinberg Center Shows off Classic Cartoons that Never get Old

FREDERICK, MD - Betty Boop, Donald Duck and Porky Pig, some of the popular cartoon faces from the 1930's, just hit the big-screen in downtown Frederick's Weinberg Center for the Arts.
"I was very skeptical to see if our daughter would enjoy the Betty Boop cartoons, which we started with, but she seems to be enjoying it and honestly, I think she's enamored with the popcorn service as well. She really likes it a lot," shares Sanjay Vanguri, a Frederick resident.
The Weinberg Center hosts what they call "Cartoon Fest," featuring two hours of classic and modern cartoons.
"It's first Saturday in downtown Frederick, so as you can imagine, there's a lot of families walking around, and they get chilly and the kids say, 'I want to go sit down!' This is perfect: You can bring them in, they can have some popcorn and snacks, and watch some vintage cartoons and some new cartoons, it's kind of exciting," says Rona Mensah, House Manager for the Weinberg Center for the Arts.
The annual event is held in January to help ease in to the new year.
"We have it in January, and it's perfect after you have the hustle and bustle of the holidays it's kind of nice to have something in the new year that's fun, you can laugh, it's the middle of the day, gets you inside and be warm. So it's a lot of fun," adds Mensah.
And you'd think it's mostly kids coming to the show.
"We have a three and a half year-old daughter, and she is inside with her mom. We like to bring her to downtown Frederick every time we get a chance, and try to expose her to cultural events," says Vanguri.
Yet people of all ages say they come for the kids series.
"It's really great to see not only parents, but you see grandparents with their grand-kids. So you see lots of different age groups, everybody in the community can enjoy it," says Mensah.
