FREDERICK, MD - For many, weekends are usually meant for sleeping in but one group of kids decided to wake up bright and early to solve math problems.

Frederick County held its 23rd Annual Mathcounts Competition at the Thomas Johnson Middle School.

"Mathcounts is a program for bright children who have an interest in math and learning math outside of the math classroom," says Melanie Provenca, assistant Mathcounts Coach for Middletown Middle School.

The students represented different middle schools in Frederick County.

Some students volunteered while some teachers recommended them to be a part of the challenge and many of them said they find math to be thrilling.

"It's a lot of fun and really, the adrenaline rush that you get whenever you're solving all the problems and also just to see old friends and to meet new people who also share the same passion for math," says Clara Tam, a 7th grader at Middletown Middle School.

"Just doing all the math problems and they're harder than my classes which are easy," says Rebecca Taylor, a 7th grader at TJ Middle School.

Teachers coached the mathletes in class and after school to prepare them for a step closer towards the trophies.

Previous presidents have recognized Mathcounts in White House ceremonies and the competition has also been featured on ESPN in recent years.
