HAGERSTOWN, MD- Out with the old and in with the new. That seems to be the trend for the new year, and it's going to affect the way we see things.
"There's a federal mandate that's part of an energy program where they are beginning to phase out different values of light bulbs, specifically incandescent light bulbs," says Frank Emma, an electrician at The Home Depot.
"I think all and all its a great thing," says Tony Mazzola, store manager at The Home Depot. "It's just that getting people to change that the hard part but once we show them the benefits and the features I think it's going to be a good thing."
Under federal law, 75-watt incandescent bulbs can no longer be produced or imported.
"I think that the sales are going to go up on the light bulbs rather than go down," says Mazzola.
And there's a "green reason" for flipping the switch.
"Now instead of the incandescent they're going into more energy efficient types of lighting, just as the automobiles have changed to smaller higher efficiency vehicles, exactly the same sort of a thing," says Emma.
"When people come in and they want to chose those CFL bulbs the first thing they think is they're going to be very expensive," says Mazzola. "We have the bulk packs now where you can buy them at a lower price."
Electricians say you'll see substantial savings if you use LED or CFL bulbs. They're also meant to last at least 10 times longer, and the best part is they come in different shades and tints to fit your style
Retailers will sell the remaining 75-watt incandescent bulbs they have in stock.

Yes, let's get rid of the safe, inexpensive incandescent bulb and go to the environmentally toxic CFL bulb. When the EPA has to tell you how to safely clean up a broken light bulb, and that involves evacuating the room and opening the windows, I have reservations.
