Democrat Tim Kaine was elected in November and Thursday was his official day on the job.
Kaine joined other senators, new and old, as they walked up the Capitol steps to be sworn in.
Senator Kaine admitted things will not be easy for the new congress because the country is still facing a budget crisis.
"We've got to be better in the 113th Congress. I am very excited, you know it was a long campaign and I do feel like I have some skills that I can bring to the table that are particular to this moment," says Senator Kaine. "I had to govern at a time when we were reducing the size of the state budget in Virginia because of the recession and I had to make a lot of painful decisions about spending without shredding the safety net and without hurting the Virginia economy."
Kaine defeated Republican George Allen in November for the seat that was vacated by Jim Webb.
