Food for Thought at Local Schools

When the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act went into effect, the reviews of its success were mixed nationwide. But some local schools say their nutrition program has been effective.
"The healthy hunger free kids act is a great program. A lot of the things they've implemented into the changes are really really good," says Judith Gordon of the Frederick County Public Schools.
Gordon says she implemented many of the changes before the law went into effect.
"It was very easy for them to embrace all the changes. We did a lot of communicating with the parents and teachers and even the students about the changes. So it was fairly easy for us," says Gordon.
While the school has seen positive results with their nutrition program, Gordon believes the Hunger Free Kids Act still has room for improvement.
"If I could change one thing it's letting them choose a fruit or vegetable if they choose to eat it," says Gordon.
Other school officials say they encourage students to be adventurous with their eating habits.
"Telling them to just try one. You don't have to take the full amount. Try one and if you like it then you can get more the next time you're on tray," says Erin Kline of FCPS.
A little food for thought.
