Avoiding Holiday Scams

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - It's the time of year when your debit and credit cards get their workouts. Plastic may be more practical than cash when it comes to shopping for holiday gifts, but swiping that magnetic stripe at the mall, supermarket, or even online can put you at risk for scams.

Some tips to help you avoid credit card scams this holiday season:

A) Keep track of all of your credit cards and receipts
B) Make sure your gift card has a value
C) Double check e-mails and advertisements online

Also, be aware of bogus charitable pleas, they are common. A con artist will jump at their first opportunity to take advantage of your generous spirit.

"A lot of places do things like Toys for Tots, Toys for Teams around the holidays. Really your best friend when choosing to make a donation towards any sort of charity is to do a little bit of research as far as what that company does with your money," says Best Buy Sales Supervisor, Alexander Blair.
