FREDERICK COUNTY, MD-  Maryland State Police have released the identity of the man killed in Monday night's car crash on I-270.

Police say Peter Halpert, of Frederick, Md., was killed after a minivan collided into his SUV.

Officials say the driver of the minivan, Joseph Grant, was traveling southbound on I-270, just north of Montgomery County, when he crossed over the median into the northbound lanes.

They say Grant's vehicle hit the SUV, killing Halpert, and continued crashing into another car. The driver of the third vehicle was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

Grant was taken to the hospital and remains in stable condition. Police say speed was a factor in the crash.

"The rain on the road probably made the road very slick. If you go too fast on the curves, you can very easily hydroplane and lose control on those road surfaces," says Corporal Todd Hill of Maryland State Police.

Police say charges are pending.
