Help with Natural Disasters from an Unlikely Source

HAGERSTOWN, MD - If a storm like hurricane Sandy ever strikes our area again, the head of the prison system says he knows some people who would want to help, inmates.

"Anytime the state has been through tough times like the hurricane and cleaning up after that we have inmates available to help with community projects which I've mentioned today," says Gary Maynard of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

Maynard spoke to members of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. He briefed them on the ways they're working with inmates to prevent violence. And using new technologies to keep them securely locked up.

"He's been a very responsive individual for us here in Washington County," says Randy Wikinson of the Washington County Sheriff's Office. "He's been a great partnership. He'll bring inmates out. He'll have cleaning. He'll do road crews. He'll do various projects in Washington County.  It's been a great benefit to tax payers in Washington County."

Even though Washington County hosts three prisons, which house thousands of inmates, Maynard says once they have served their time they need to leave and go back to their home county.

A message that resonated with the local crowd.
