FREDERICK, MD - Frederick is the only city in Maryland to make it to the finals of the Prettiest Painted Places contest.

The Paint Quality Institute is sponsoring the contest to recognize towns or neighborhoods with community-wide curb appeal.

"Folks just enjoy walking up and down 2nd Street or 3rd Street looking at the residential areas and how well those houses are kept up. The paint jobs are almost always in great shape, and if they're not, somebody is out there working on them," said John Fieseler, executive director of the Tourism Council of Frederick County.

Frederick made it to the top 10 finalists in the Northeast region.

The Tourism Council of Frederick County and the Downtown Frederick Partnership submitted 21 images. They include some of Frederick's well-known painted murals, along with bright paintings at homes and businesses.

"It's really a range from a typical painted building to some of the very creative uses of paint in our downtown," Fieseler said.

The judges should pick the winners by the end of this month.

"The ambiance of our downtown is one of the things that people who live here might take for granted," Fieseler said. "They know it's pretty, but they don't realize the impact it has on folks that come here from other places."
