Washington County Senior Center Project Put on Hold

WASHINGTON COUNTY- Washington county is the only county in Maryland without a Senior Center. Plans are in the works to build one, but that hit a slight snag Tuesday.

"A lot of people didn't show up because they are very weary because this has been going on for four to five years," says Susan Griffith, supporter of the Senior Center.

Gredy Grimm, another supporter says, "People don't know of all the things that they do up there to keep you healthy, to keep you out of the hospital, to keep us out of the nursing homes that's what people don't know about."

For two hours residents stood in front of the commissioners explaining why they needed a senior center. Although every commissioner agreed that a center is necessary they didn't agree on the specifics of it.

"Commissioners discussed with our public works director, Joe Kroboth, some questions that they had and it looks like we're going to have another two weeks to make sure all of our questions are answered before it goes back to the board," says Sarah Sprecher, spokesperson for Washington County.

"This is the time and place," says Bill Beard, Commission on Aging. "There are adequate bids, the commissioners voted to fund this back in May it was a unanimous vote and we think that this project should go forward."

If commissioners decide to move forward with the Senior Center project it would be located on a lot at Hagerstown Community College, right down the street from the ARC.

"The reason I want this new one is because we'll have a place of our own where we can do a lot more  things," says Beard.

The center would be a one-story building on an acre and a half of land with a price tag of over $5 million. But supporters say there's no price for the happiness of seniors.

Commissioners will meet again in two weeks to make a decision on the Washington County Senior Center.
